Tractor Spotlight
At Reubicon Tractor Parts, we don’t just sell quality parts for Mahindra tractors, we also like to share helpful and interesting information about maintenance as well as highlight some of these amazing machines. Today, let’s take a look at the Mahindra 4500 models.
This popular tractor model is from Mahindra’s line of compact utility tractors, and in the 4500 series, you have the option of either the 4540 or 4550 model. The 4550 is a more powerful machine with 48 HP and a 3-point hitch lift capacity of 3,527 pounds.
Purchased new this four-wheel-drive tractor includes a 7-year powertrain warranty and you have the option of selecting either industrial or agriculture tires. Designed for light-duty and medium-duty tasks, the Mahindra 4550 includes a full constant mesh transmission with eight forward gears, two reverse gears and a dual-clutch.
The Mahindra 4540 is available either in two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The two-wheel-drive model includes agriculture tires, while the Mahindra 4550 four-wheel-drive model includes either agriculture or industrial tires, depending on your needs. Both options include a 7-year powertrain warranty if purchased new.
Both Mahindra models also don’t need to use a diesel particulate filter, which means there’s no regen cycle. Instead, Mahindra has developed what they call mCRD technology. This technology adheres to emission standards yet there’s no loss of power due to regen. Of course, you’ll find all of the replacement parts you might need for all tractors in the 4500 lines in our Mahindra parts catalog.
Buying A Used Tractor? Here Are Some Tips
While purchasing a new tractor might be in your budget, buying used can be a great way to save money and there are plenty of used Mahindra models for sale, including the popular 4500 series tractors listed above. Before you purchase, be sure to inspect the following:
Appearance – While they say you can’t judge a book by its cover, if the tractor looks clean and well cared for, this is a good sign. Be sure to ask the owner if the tractor was kept inside a garage or barn or shed as opposed to being stored outdoors.
Tires – You don’t have to go around and kick the tires as we did back in the old days, but inspect the tires carefully for signs of wear and tear.
Engine – Lift the hood and start the engine to ensure that there aren’t any visible leaks. Take a look at the hoses and inspect them for cracks or other signs of wear, and also take the tractor for a test drive to judge whether or not it seems to be running well and that you feel comfortable with the machine.
Smoke – Make note of the smoke coming out of the tractor. It should be clear and if it is blue, black or white, this could indicate that there are problems. For instance, blue smoke indicates that oil is burning, and this can be an expensive fix. Black smoke typically means that the tractor’s fuel filter or air filter needs to be replaced, so ask to look at these filters. With white smoke, this could mean that you have water in the fuel system or a problem with the cooling system.
In many cases, it’s best to opt for a certified pre-owned tractor as these have been inspected and all parts should be in good working order. However, a private buyer can be a cheaper option. Only purchase from a private buyer if they can provide maintenance information and the buyer allows you to thoroughly inspect the machine.
